Nucleation characteristics and stability considerations during flow boiling in microchannels

چکیده

Flow boiling in microchannels and minichannels has received considerable attention in the past decade. The interest stems from the possibility of achieving the extremely high heat fluxes, over 1 kW/cm, needed for future generation electronics cooling application. The attention has been focused on obtaining experimental heat transfer and pressure drop data, but the fundamental aspects of nucleation have been largely overlooked. In the present paper, the local wall superheat and bulk liquid subcooling prevailing in the channel at the onset of nucleation are identified as critical in the flow boiling stability. To understand the role of local conditions on nucleation, the available literature on onset of nucleate boiling is critically reviewed and the relationships between the local bulk subcooling and local wall superheat as a function of nucleation cavity diameters are presented. The unique flow characteristics in microchannels and minichannels are further analyzed and their influence on flow boiling stability is investigated experimentally using visual images generated with a high-speed camera. 2005 Elsevier Inc. Heat Transfer Mechanisms During Flow Boiling in Microchannels

The forces due to surface tension and momentum change during evaporation, in conjunction with the forces due to viscous shear and inertia, govern the two-phase flow patterns and the heat transfer characteristics during flow boiling in microchannels. These forces are analyzed in this paper, and two new nondimensional groups, K1 and K2 , relevant to flow boiling phenomenon are derived. These grou...

Further Evaluation of a Flow Boiling Correlation for Microchannels and Minichannels

Flow boiling in microchannels and minichannels is being investigated for its potential for high heat flux removal in electronics and other devices. The small channel dimensions characteristic of these channels result, under most circumstances, in laminar flow at the flow rates used in these applications. The present work investigates the applicability of the correlation developed by Kandlikar a...

Scale effects on flow boiling heat transfer in microchannels: A fundamental perspective

Flow boiling in microchannels has received considerable attention from researchers worldwide in the last decade. A scaling analysis is presented to identify the relative effects of different forces on the boiling process at microscale. Based on this scaling analysis, the flow pattern transitions and stability for flow boiling of water and FC-77 are evaluated. From the insight gained through the...

Subcooled two-phase flow boiling in a microchannel heat sink: comparison of conventional numerical models

Subcooled flow boiling in multi-microchannels can be used as an efficient thermal management approach in compact electrical devices. Highly subcooled flow boiling of HFE 7100 is studied in two microchannel heat sinks to choose a proper numerical model for simulating boiling flows in microchannels. Results of five different numerical models, including Volume of Fluid (VOF), Eulerian boiling, Eul...

Effects of channel dimension, heat flux, and mass flux on flow boiling regimes in microchannels

Experiments are conducted with a perfluorinated dielectric fluid, Fluorinert FC-77, to investigate the effects of channel size and mass flux (225–1420 kg/ms) on microchannel flow boiling regimes by means of high-speed photography. Seven different silicon test pieces with parallel microchannels of widths ranging from 100 to 5850 lm, all with a depth of 400 lm, are considered. Flow visualizations...
